I am a proud member of Naval Lodge 4 on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, and Hiram-Takoma 10 in Takoma Park, Maryland. As part of the rich tradition of Freemasonry, I will try to collect some of the cooler things going on in my Masonic life in Washington, DC, and elsehwere, including the Grand Lodge of Washington and the Scottish Rite of Washington.
Sexism lives-unfortunate
Accent on the "frat" part of that word. A member of the Boys Club? Not what I expected to see. Most organizations for women allow male members. Why no turn-around? For all the good it does, any group like this proliferates a nasty undercurrent of sexism that should have been over long ago.
Sigh
Well, that might be your opinion but I head an excellent reason why this is good: we're not doing anything too cool -- but it's cool to us. Also, my brothers' wives would probably not be OK with their husbands taking off a couple nights a month with coed get-togethers... the single-sex nature of the meetings can really be reassuring to married couple -- just think of it. That and brotherhood -- there is a true desire to bond as men -- as men, not as humans, per se. Anyway, I would probably have agreed with you a decade ago, in my 20s and 30s, but now that I am older, the brotherhood of men is very important to me.
